Almost every day we buy things. We buy food, we buy clothes, we buy different kind(s) of goods.

I like shopping.

First of all, I like shopping because when I’m going to buy something for myself or for my friend(s) it makes me feel happy.

Generally when I shop, I prefer to go … I prefer to go  directly to the shopping centre because I can try the item, I can select what I want and I can see if it suits me.

On the other hand, you can use internet, because on the web you can save time, you don’t need to take your car or you don’t need to take the bus to go to the shopping centre. You can save money because you can compare different items on different websites and you can buy everything. Even if you are in London you can buy an item which is in New York.

When I first came in this country I was really surprised, because in London you can buy everything and it’s really cheap, whereas in Paris you can everything as well, but you have to pay more.

In my opinion, when you buy something it’s important if you have a good price, a good quality and a good design, and I think London it’s a good place for shopping because you can find all of that.

These activities aim to help you prepare for ESOL speaking examinations and give short, informal presentations.  You will be able to hear real ESOL learners trying out the activities, and compare your speaking with theirs'.  In this activity, Kelly talks about shopping.

Task 1 - useful expressions

Task 2 - record your talk

Now prepare your talk. Before you start,  think about:

  • what you like or dislike about going shopping
  • the sort of things you like to buy
  • whether you prefer going to a shopping centre or shopping on the internet

You can use your mobile phone to record yourself speaking.

Listen to yourself and think about the following questions:

  • How did you introduce your talk?
  • Did you speak clearly?
  • Did you use any of the words and phrases in Task 1?

If you think you could improve, you can record yourself again.

Task 3 - listen to Kelly

Listen to Kelly giving her talk.

Did Kelly have the same opinions as you?

Task 4 - using new expressions
