Moving from India

After a long wait, in April 1997, I finally came to the UK. Two weeks after our marriage in India, my husband had to go back for his job but I had to wait for two years for my visa to be approved. My family & I were so worried because my marriage was on the line. I still remember the day when Dr Udwadia (the immigration doctor) told me that I could go to the UK - I was so happy that I started to cry.

The lifestyle in England is totally different from India. Everything was unusual to me - the weather, the people, the food, the education, the culture, the houses and, especially, the accents of everybody’s speech. I had to adjust myself in every little way, which was difficult for me in the beginning, especially when my in-laws kept telling me that this was not India and that you couldn’t do this and you couldn’t do that. I had to stay strong and adjust myself quickly, as after two months I was expecting my first son.

The support from my husband really helped me settle in and overcome the homesick feelings I had on leaving my family back in India. England has become my home now.
