Student in class.

Family learning has always existed in its natural state where parental figures pass on skills to their offspring. There are many reasons, however, why parents and carers today are often disempowered to teach their children these skills. They may, for example, have negative feelings about learning or lack confidence. Family learning provision helps parents become effective learners and better equipped to support their children to thrive in a positive learning environment. It aims to support the whole family during life-long learning so that a culture of learning becomes the norm. This module focuses on teaching parents/carers with ESOL needs, as negative feelings and anxiety towards learning can be further compounded if language poses a barrier.

ESOL Nexus professional development modules are intended to help teachers to develop in their role in a range of contexts. They have been written by expert practitioners and quality assured by a wider team. We hope that you will find this module useful.
